“Double-jointed” is what most people know this as — and the term refers to ‘excessive’ mobility — meaning the body is more flexible than it should be 🤸
It’s much more common in females & typically increases during pregnancy due to hormonal shifts🤰
Acquired hypermobility from repetitive activities that require a lot of flexibility (gymnastics, dance, yoga, etc.) typically only affects joints — the ligaments, muscles, tendons, etc. 🩰
Genetic hypermobility conditions affect all connective tissue in the body — including blood vessels & nerves — which can affect blood pressure & chronic pain 🫀
During pregnancy, the increased elasticity helps increase blood flow to the uterus & baby, while also helping create more space to push baby out. This can temporarily lead to pain & discomfort because it’s putting more stress on the joints which makes all our soft tissues work harder 💪🏽
Pelvic floor physical therapy can help address any of the causes of hypermobility — to provide pain relief, increase joint stability & neuromuscular activation, & develop a home program for long-term pain relief & prevention 🫶🏼
