Think you might have pelvic floor issues but are a little intimidated because you have no idea what pelvic floor PT even is?!
It’s way less weird than you might think, a lot more fun & so beneficial to your overall health!
Our first session will look a little something like this:
1. We chat (a lot) about you, your history, your goals & any questions you may have for me👂🏽
We spend the first few minutes talking about what pelvic PT is & answer any questions you may have!
Then we spend a good amount of time talking through your healthy history & timeline of symptoms. Often what you have to say about your health & daily life is just as important as the physical assessment in helping to paint the bigger picture of what’s going on in your body!
We also establish the goals you have for Pelvic PT – big goals & small goals
2. You learn a lot about your body’s anatomy and how it functions 🧠 🫁
I spend a lot of time educating you on your body’s anatomy & how connected all of your body’s processes are – we talk about how a lot of your symptoms may be connected to.
I talk about how bladder, bowel & reproductive functions can impact our muscles, joints & other surrounding soft tissues & why symptoms may flare.
We’ll probably also begin to talk about how our nervous system gets mixed up in this!
3. We assess your body! 📋
We assess the movement of your spine, ribs, hips, abdomen & pelvis – & sprinkle in any other regions of the body as indicated from our symptom review.
I look at joint mobility, muscle tension, strength, neuromuscular activation, fascial restrictions & much more.
A comprehensive full-body eval should typically take more than just a single session – we pick which regions to prioritize on day one based on your history.
4. Optional internal pelvic floor exam 🙋♀️
An optional part of the evaluation is an internal pelvic floor exam, that we’ll discuss in detail before you make a decision. It can always be deferred to a future session too!
There are no stirrups or speculums, just a gloved & lubricated finger to gently assess muscle tension, tenderness & strength along with other soft tissues including nerves, ligaments, fascia & tendons.
This also allows me to identify related areas of soft tissue restriction that contribute to local pelvic floor tension.
5. We craft a unique plan of care to reach your personal goals based on all the data we gathered during the evaluation 📝
Once we’ve formed our initial hypothesis for some of your symptoms & presentation, we talk about next steps & the best course of action to begin managing your symptoms & working towards your goals.
I’ll send you home with a few things to try before your next session – stretches, morning/night routine, eating habits, bathroom habits, etc. that are practical to fit into your daily life!
6. We start treating the problem areas & send you home with things to try 💃🏻
Once we’ve established your Plan of Care, we get to dive into the fun stuff!
This typically starts on the 2nd visit, but we may get to some on day 1 depending upon the complexity of your symptoms.
Based on your initial presentation, we’ll start working on some of the areas we identified & continue to re-assess for symptom relief & functional improvements as we go along.
Please reach out if you have any questions about pelvic floor PT & if it may be helpful for you! (Hint: every single human can benefit from pelvic PT 🙃) www.empower-pelvicfloorpt.com
It’s not just about the pelvis, it’s actually about how every part of your body influences & responds to your pelvic floor! 🌎
