• THE COLON CURTAIN • can affect your gut motility & can be important to include in pelvic PT manual therapy techniques to relieve fascial & visceral restrictions.
↑ As the ascending colon runs up the right side of the body, it turns when it reaches the liver – called the Hepatic Flexure – up underneath the lower ribs.
→ The transverse colon passes through the outer peritoneum – through a small opening in this connective tissue – before running underneath the diaphragm to the left side of the body.
↓ The colon makes another turn when it reaches the spleen – called the Splenic Flexure – passing back through the connective tissue before the descending colon runs down the left side of the body.
↱ Both of these flexures ↴ sit up underneath the lower few ribs, making them difficult areas to access for a colon massage.
This is where specific fascial release techniques can come in handy to help keep stool moving around these tight corners!
